Good old V8 gas guzzler times vs 4 WD Diesel power

1991 I travelled for for the first time for about 3 months through the US and Canada, in Los Angeles I bought this Ford Ltd Station Wagon 1978.

I guess this was when I really got the taste for road tripping the Americas, even though it was the North of 'em only. 2WD vs 4WD some 20 years later.

My First Step on US Soil 1991

A bit of a flash back. 1990 to 1991 I backpacked around the world. Setting off in Zurich Switzerland heading to the capital of the USSR, Moscow, taking the transsibirian railway to Shanghai, through China to the, at the time, portouguese conlony of Macau and by speedboat to the vibrant british colony of Hong Kong. Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand were on my way before exploring the South Sea islands of Fidji.

This is where I took an Air New Zealand 747, which brought me to Hawaii and with that to the very first time in my life when I put my feet on US ground. Hawaii in the early 90ies has been absolutely fascinating. Active volcanos, lava flows and tropical vegetation meeting on the steadily growing archipelago of Hawaii. One day I am going back, if nothing else just to see what it looks like now.

And in case you've wondered what I have looked like than, this is a shot my girlfriend at the time, Esti took of my in Fidjii. Yes, we actually had some one else taking picture of ourselfs, this was before even the word "Selfie" has been invented, let alone carrying a portable computer or a cell phone all around the world.

No selfies, no laptops and..., no digital photography neither, those are scanned slides, so, excuse the bad quality of the pictures.

I hope you enjoy anyways!

Australia Years Ago

1990 was the first time I have quit my job back home in Switzerland to trade a scheduled working life against travelling and living on the road. In fall of that year I took a flight from Zurich/Switzerland to Moskow/USSR. From there by the transsibirian railway to China. A different China I suppose. Down to Macau, at the time a portouguese colony and by speed boat to Hong Kong, still being british those years.

Backpacking South through Souths East Asia, I have taken a flight from Singapore to Darwin in the Northern Territories of Australia. It was there, where I first became an overlander travelling by cars overseas in a foreign continent. In Darwin I stretched my backpacking budget to its max and bought an old, and I tell you, a really old, Holden Kingswood. A straight 6 cylinder gasoline engine with just one carburator and a 3 gear manual gear box gauranteed for high fuel and oil consumption combined with low performance. Many times I have been dreaming of the huge 4 WD Toyotas that where omnipresent in Australia at the time as soon as it got a bit rural or outbacky.

Hard to believe but the good old Holden held strong and was a good companion for some 20'000 miles or so within a bit more than 3 months on the red continent.

A bit of a flash back here as I am scanning my old slides right now. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did when the first scanned slides poped-up on my laptop's screen.

I seem to hav had a thing for rear awnings already those days. Looks similar to the one I constructed on the blue truck some 25 years later.

Carboardboxes served to get some how organizied with my gear. So much more room in the trunk of the Holden compared to my backpack.

I thought I was in the desert, when I met this fat fellow one morning.

Beautiful nature...

...and impressive Road-Trains.

Flashback: Colombia or Switzerland?

Yes, yes, I know you know: I am back in Switzerland. And looking at the picture below you might think that is all prove for it. And now, watch out, this is a Flashback thing. Believe it or not and not one...

...that is going back all the way before I even set off to explore the Americas. This is not a Swiss Chalet, or actually it is a Swiss Chalet. But it is a Swiss Chalet in Colombia. The picture was taken exactly two years ago, on January 21, 2013 in Colombia. This is Hotel Sindamanoy at Laguna de la Cocha in Colombia.

We were nearly the only off-season guests and to give them some little business we decided to take a room vs. camping in the parking lot. It was cold, rainy and windy, so the hotel night was a welcome change to the nights out camping. The staff was super friendly as usual in Colombia and super sweet on top of it. It was a cold rainy night, cold even in the cosy chalet room. At around 9pm the girl from the front desk was knocking at our room door and, without saying a word, just with a big smile, handed us two super hot hot-water-bottles.

On The Road Again - On The Ship Again

Today it is exactly two years since I was heading down to Veracruz to get prepared to leave Central America and Ship to Colombia. The following two pictures I shot while driving down to the coast leaving the beautiful Central Highlands of Mexico behind.

Funny, now exactly two years later I am on my way to shipping again. This time it will be for the long way, back over the Atlantic towards Europe.

Today though I am not on the road and therefore can neither present broken axles nor Chassis-Pilots to you. So all you get is a little Flash Back. - Sorry.

If you are on the road yourself, HERE is some insights to Vehicle Shipping. - Whether on the raod or on the sea, happy cruising!

Three Years Ago: Met a Blonde with a Tain

Three years ago I painfully steered the blue truck through some salty water when passing the road at low tide to reach...

...a fantastic camp spot, directly at the Sea of Cortez' warm waters.

Beautiful kayaking in the early morning hours...

...and as I paddled to a deserted island...

...I've met a topless blue eyed blonde with a severe sun tain.

The blue truck 4 years ago

It was in March 2010 when the blue truck got its roof chopped off at ORB in Thun...

...while I was working on...

...the floor panel with all the mounting rails...

This is what I got exactly two years ago in Guatemala at Semuc Champey.

I Want What They Have!

Ok, you are on the English blue truck blog, for the coming days you will get some statistics of my trip on the Americas, which I started in fall 2010.

Things like how many flat tires...

...who I met...

...what you liked the best on the blog and such.

And no, here you won't get a month by month review of what I have experienced during the last 34 months. Those are the German readers that are getting that. And now you are saying:

HERE you have it, learn German and read my blog posts on www.thebluetruck.blogspot.com in German!

Stats # 1: What YOU Like Best

Panama Canal

As promised, after 100'000 hits on my two blogs and approaching 200'000 clicks on my pictures, I thought it might be a good time to share some stats with you.

Do you know which post on the english blue truck blog has been the most clicked one? It seems as you are equally fascinated by the Canal cutting through Panama as I am: "Panama Canal in Numbers" is by far leading in terms of clicks per post: 1'446 times some one has clicked on his mouse to read about this monumental construction.

ET is back!
Not even close to it but still your Number 2, another blog post from Panama. The reincarnation of ET who left us with the words "I'll be right back" and was never seen again until I spotted him in Panama. 592 clicks.

Just about four months on-line and already on position 3 and onyour favorite list: "Classic Cars on the Panamericana" with 344 clicks.

Classic Cars all over
It seems as cars cause a big interest on this blog. Another thing I share with you - you that are clicking on my posts. "Water Crossings" is visted continously again and has found 170 people being interested in it so far.

More car stuff on position 5: "The blue truck meets the big truck" has reached 166 mouse clicks by this morning.

Padre Island, Texas
More on the nature side is number 6: "Padre Island - South Texas" is scraching at one hundred clicks, exactly 99 times the mouse has been moved over that blog post with nothing but a couple of pictures of the beautiful place.

Now, this post is only about a month old and has made it into the top ten within hours since it was on-line: "Beautiful Girls and Tough Trucks". There are things you love more than cars! Or was it the trucks that caused you to click?

Position 8 is more something for the biker type: "Quick Replacement" with 77 clicks.

Surprise, surprise, but more a suprise that this post has not made it further up on the list of the top ten: "Topless Blondes" is only on Position 9.

But, you like it wet & wild: "Do You Know What A OH MY GOD Shower Is?" is on position 10 with 67 clicks.

Topless Blondes!
